MUDLAB designed this compound of three adobe residences for a friend looking to spend more time Marfa. Two of the units are intended as long-term rentals, providing much needed housing. The third unit would be used by the client while in town. The layout of the buildings is such that each set of occupants can operate independently, while also having opportunities for interaction in shared outdoor spaces. At the street, the units are modest, with a scale in keeping with the surrounding neighborhood. Indoor spaces are simple, and the living spaces are extended by direct connections to generous shaded outdoor spaces. A large part of the site is left open to be reestablished as a native grassland.
These houses are designed to be constructed with locally-produced adobe brick, serving as an example of how to bring traditional adobe into the world of modern construction.
